Deep Fried Cookie Dough wins fair food contest

Deep Fried Cookie DoughAll fair foods get their start in one of two ways: as an idea floating in the back of someone’s mind or when someone accidentally drops something unusual in their deep fryer. The The entries this time around included seven deep fried treats:

  • Deep Fried Latte
Fried pastry topped with cappuccino ice cream, caramel sauce, whipped cream and instant coffee powder.
  • Fried Cookie Dough
Cookie dough with chocolate chips, pecans and coconut, dipped in batter and fried. Other cookie flavors may be offered, such as oatmeal raisin.
  • Zesty Fried Guacamole Bites
Small scoops of guacamole breaded and fried. Served with salsa or ranch or spicy ranch dressings.
  • Country Pride Peach Cobbler on a Stick
Peach cobbler with dumplings rolled in pastry dough and fried. Covered with brown sugar and cinnamon and put on a stick.
  • Fernie’s Fried Chili Frito Burrito
Chili and chili-cheese-flavored Fritos wrapped in an uncooked flour tortilla and fried. Toppings include cheese sauce, shredded cheddar, jalapeños, sour cream, hot sauce and onions.
  • B.W.’s Original Fried Banana Pudding
Banana pudding wrapped in a flour tortilla, fried and topped with whipped cream and powdered sugar or cinnamon.
  • Mama’s Fried Sweet Potato Pie
Pie filling wrapped in flour tortilla, fried and topped with powdered sugar and cinnamon.

It must have been tough for the judges, but Deep Fried Cookie Dough came out on top as the best tasting new fair food of the year. It is the third time that creator Abel Gonzales Jr. has won an award at the Big Tex contest, as he was the creator of Deep Fried Coke last year and, before that, took home top honors with his Elvis-tribute: a Fried Peanut Butter, Jelly and Banana Sandwich. Runner up, as most creative new food, was the Deep Fried Latte entry, which seems to be akin to a coffee version of the deep fried Coke from last year.

This is so bad, because I think I would love to be a judge for that contest!! I’d probably gain 10 pounds, but it would be worth it!

Speaking of unusual deep-fried foods, a friend once was served deep-fried mayonnaise. He said it was good, but I can’t see it catching on at fairs.
