A knife just for lettuce

Posted on

lettuceknife.JPGThose of you who don’t like the idea of “unitasker” kitchen implements should look away now, because this knife was designed to cut only one thing: lettuce. These knives are made of plastic or nylon and have serrated blades. Supposedly, these materials are superior for cutting lettuce because they will make lettuce less likely to turn brown at the edges than metal knives.

Now, I have never had a problem with the metal blades of any of my knives turning lettuce brown. The only thing that does that is leaving the lettuce in the refrigerator a few days too long and, as I don’t make a habit of preparing my salads several days ahead of time, I think I’ll pass on this particular knife as a salad-making tool.

I would consider using it as a cake knife, though, since it would be much easier/safer to transport to picnics, parties and other events.

I have one of these and it is GREAT for cutting hot brownies. Kind of like a plastic knife – doesn’t drag the brownie.

I handled one of these in a store once and it was very sharp! Not too good for picnicking or travel.

I noticed these in the store, recently, and the first thing that occurred to me was, “Oh crud… now it only takes $5.99 to completely thwart airline security!”

Does a completely plastic weapon of death, which wouldn’t be picked up by a metal detector, strike anyone else as a particularly bad idea, in this day and age? Or, is it just me?

I have one of these and use it all the time for cutting brownies, cake, cornbread, fritatta, etc. out of my nonstick pans. Very sharp – works great – better than a spatula.

I’ve always thought really similarly about cutting lettuce, a nice sharp chef knife always does the trick. I like the idea about taking it to picnics or cutting baked goods with it. Thanks!
