Baking Bites for Craftsy: A Crumble Topping for Any Pie

A crisp, buttery crumble topping is a delicious way to top off any pie. You’ll most often see crumble toppings on apple pies (they’re sometimes called Dutch apple pies), but a crumble topping can make a delicious addition to any fruit filling. Over on the Craftsy blog (it’s free!) I’m sharing a recipe for an All Purpose Pie Crumble Topping. The streusel mixture is quick and easy to make – and the recipe makes quite a bit, so you’ll have a generous amount to cover all of your filling. I recently used this recipe to top off my jammy Blueberry Streusel Pie, with delicious results.

This crumble topping recipe is also quite versatile, as you can add spices, nuts or even oatmeal to the basic mixture, giving the topping a different flavor/texture that may fit your filling better. For instance, chopped pecans and cinnamon can be a delicious addition to an apple pie topping. Allspice pairs exceptionally well with cherries. Vanilla can also be added to every variation. When using a streusel topping, you will still need to follow the baking directions that go with your filling, so be prepared to tend a sheet of aluminum foil over the crumble for pies with a long baking time.
