Yesterday was Valentine’s Day, and I am giving a nod to the holiday by showcasing Sweet & Simple: Dessert for Two, a lovely cookbook that focuses on small batch desserts that just so happen to be ideal for celebrating a romantic holiday or occasion. Truth be told, they’re also good any night of the week when you don’t have a big crowd to serve. I’m always in favor of anything that inspires us to find more time to bake – and I know that I’ll make cookies twice as often when I’m baking smaller batches!
The book opens with a comprehensive introduction to all the ingredients you’ll need to stock your kitchen with, as well as the tools you need for small batch baking. Some tools, such as whisks, bowls and spatulas, are exactly the same as you would use in any other recipe. Others, such as the bakeware, require scaled down versions of pans you might typically use – or simply repurposing muffin tins, ramekins and other items for different types of desserts.
There are over 100 recipes in the book to tempt you and whoever you’ll be sharing the sweets with, from cakes to cookies to pies. The recipes are easy to follow along with and, while the recipes are scaled way back from their full size counterparts, they don’t require any special measuring equipment. There is sure to be a small batch version of some of your favorites in here – and the recipes are a great starting point for putting your own twist on, as well. There are plenty of photos that make the recipes come to life if you need any motivation beyond the recipe titles.
