Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Caramel Sauce, reviewed

Trader Joe's Pumpkin Caramel Sauce, reviewed
Pumpkin spice has been a very popular flavor this holiday season. That familiar blend of cinnamon, cloves and other spices is easy to incorporate into all kinds of dishes. Pumpkin itself is a little bit more difficult to work with, since it contains so much moisture. Trader Joe’s has stocked their shelves generously with pumpkin spice items this season, but this Pumpkin Caramel Sauce really aught my eye the last time I dropped in because it includes real pumpkin in addition to all those lovely spices.

The caramel sauce has a great buttery pumpkin smell as soon as you open it, very reminiscent of pumpkin pie. The sauce is made with sugar, sweetened condensed milk, butter, pumpkin and spices, which include cinnamon, clove, ginger and nutmeg. You can really taste every ingredient on the list – the complex spices, the fresh pumpkin, the dairy sweetened condensed milk and a underlying note of caramelized sugar. It is delicious, especially if you are a pumpkin or pumpkin spice fan looking for something a little different this season. It’s a little on the runny/sticky side, which makes it both very easy to incorporate into recipes and easy to get it out of the jar. The downside of the consistency is that it is easy to get it everywhere while you’re pouring or spooning it out of the jar. I’m ok with having to clean off a sticky counter after I’ve eaten my fill, but it is messy enough to make it noteworthy.

Once you have an open jar, you can drizzle it on top of cobblers, pie and ice creams. OR, you could stir it into a mug of coffee to create a delicious Caramel Pumpkin Spice Latte.
