Bites from other Blogs

Bites from other BlogsThe days are starting to get slightly shorter and the mornings are beginning to get slightly cooler, and those changes mean that we are heading into fall. Bloggers everywhere are getting inspired by the flavors of fall and, while summer berries are still making appearances, apples and warm fall spices are slowly replacing them. From simple recipes, like my Oven-Roasted Maple Apples, to complex ones, fall flavors are here to stay for the season.

  • A Brown Table‘s Bourbon Peach Ice Cream is ideal for bridging the gap between the end of summer and the beginning of fall. It is made with plenty of fresh peaches and spiked generously with enough bourbon to give it a good flavor. The ice cream base is made with cream cheese, which gives it a slightly tangy flavor and a velvety texture that is perfect for showing off its star flavors. Serve this as-is or put big scoops on top of fruit crumbles and apple pie.
  • The Apple Cake with Brown Sugar Glaze that Let’s Dish baked is a simple cake recipe that is easy to whip up when you have apples on hand. The cake is full of apples and chopped nuts, and it is flavored with kissed with cinnamon. A buttery brown sugar and vanilla glaze finishes it off. It’s a cake that can be whipped up quickly for company and it is big enough to serve to a crowd.
  • The Apple-Spice Layer Cake with Goat Cheese Frosting that Tracey’s Culinary Adventures cooked up is a slightly more elaborate apple cake. This fall cake has three layers of spiced up apple cake, made with plenty of fresh apples to make sure that their flavor comes through. It is finished with a frosting that uses both goat cheese and cream cheese, so it has flavor that is tangier than most cream cheese frostings and that will set off the sweetness of the apples instead of just covering them up.
  • I Heart Eating incorporated apples into breakfast in a batch of Caramel Apple Sticky Buns. For this recipe, a sweet yeast dough is filled with a sweet apple pie filling mixture. The buns are placed in individual muffin cups and baked – which makes them easy to serve individually – and they are finished with a decadent caramel glaze. You will get the flavor of apple pie in every bite, as well as the sticky, gooey sweetness of a cinnamon bun.
  • Grapes are not the first fruit that people reach for when it comes to baking, but grapes are a fall fruit and they can be a fantastic addition to baked goods. The Messy Baker made a Concord Grape Pie that let grapes be the star of the dessert. The pie is loaded with 2 pounds of concord grapes that make a richly colored and flavored grape filling (be careful not to get the juice on your shirt as you eat!). It’s topped with a buttery brown sugar crumble that adds a little crunch to the top of the pie and a hint of extra sweetness to the filling.
