They say that the first slice of cake is always the most difficult to get out of the pan. It’s hard to get a spatula or knife underneath a slice without being able to approach it from the side. This is doubly true of pies, where not only is it difficult to get the first slice out cleanly, but it is difficult to cut the other pieces neatly once the first piece has been removed and the structure of the top of the pie (especially for a double-crust pie) has been compromised. All too often the filling spills out of the first piece and the crust buckles under the knife when you cut the second and third slices.
This neat Pie Cutter from Progressive International easily solves these problems. The cutter divides up the entire pie in one shot, neatly separating the slices so that they can be removed easily with filling and crust intact. The cutter is adjustable, so you can determine the size and number of slices that your pie will have, and it is collapsible for easy storage. If you don’t want to cut up the whole pie, you can divide it into quarters or halves and leave the cutter in place to hold the pie neatly together – much like the pie gate from Progressive International does – until you are ready for a few more servings.

March 17, 2009Wow this is a great tool. The first piece is indeed always the hardest to take out and it always seems to mess up the rest of the beautiful pie or cake. Simple yet very effective solution.

April 13, 2009Interesting. I’m kind of kicking myself for not coming up with this one myself. Anyway, I’ll save the $15 and do it the old fashioned way, with my $90 knife!
