Every presidential election year, Family Circle magazine publishes two favorite cookie recipes – one from each of the new potential First Ladies – and lets readers cast their vote for their favorite. The vote isn’t to see who should end up in the White House, but whose cookies are better. This year, the contest was between Michelle Obama’s Amaretto Shortbread Cookies and Cindy McCain’s Oatmeal Butterscotch Cookies. Both cookies were good, but McCain’s favorite recipe ended up edging out Obama’s to win the cookie election. Now that the results are in, I have to admit that I liked the oatmeal cookies slightly better myself, partially because I thought they were slightly more attractive in appearance and partially because I’m just a sucker for an oatmeal cookie.
These two aren’t the only two recipes to be enjoyed by presidential candidates. In the spirit of election day, and the political process in general, you can bake up a batch of cookies enjoyed by just about any of our country’s past presidents in the book Presidential Cookies.

November 4, 2008I just made the McCain cookies this weekend and I have to say they were pretty darn tasty- and easy to make as well which is great.. They’re nice and chewy and I can pretend that they’re “healthy” because of all the oatmeal 🙂

November 4, 2008I tried both recipes when you first posted them, and my family and I all agreed that we prefered the oatmeal. The butterscotch chips make a nice change from everyday oatmeal cookies.
