Banana Batida
Blended drinks are always crowd pleasers in the summer, a great way to quench your thirst and cool down. They can be made in a variety of ways, whether you’re whipping up a batch of smoothies for all ages or mixing a pitcher of pina coladas for a more grown up party. This Banana Batida is a blended drink from Brazil that can be made in both alcoholic and non-alcoholic versions. It’s sweet, fruity and very easy to make.

While the caipirinha is one of the most famous cocktails in Brazil, it isn’t the only one. A batida is a blended cocktail that is typically made with cachaça and juice, coconut milk, sweetened condensed milk or some combination of those ingredients. Since it is blended, batidas tend to be sweeter and less potent than other cocktails, including the caipirinha, and are wonderful for sipping on a hot summer day.

Banana Batida

This Banana Batida is made with ripe bananas, sweetened condensed milk and plenty of ice. The sweetened condensed milk really pairs well with the banana, making it seem as if all that sweetness comes from the banana alone, and it also gives the drink a velvety texture. You can make both an alcoholic version by adding cachaça and a non alcoholic version by substituting an equal amount of milk. This allows you to make the milkshake-like drink for guests of all ages to enjoy! I personally enjoy them both ways and have been known to whip up the non-alcoholic version for myself in the morning instead of my regular breakfast routine.

This makes a fairly large drink, so feel free to split it into two smaller glasses if you want to share. The banana-flavored drink goes down easily and I think you’ll be surprised at how quickly the full sized version of this recipe disappears once it is poured into a glass.

Banana Batida
1 medium-large banana
3 oz sweetened condensed milk
1 1/2 oz cachaça (for boozy version) or
1 12 oz milk (for non-boozy version)
approx 2 cups ice cubes

Combine all ingredients in a blender, using cachaça for an “adult” version and milk for a non-alcoholic version. Blend at low speed until ice is crushed, then increase speed to high and blend for 30-50 seconds, until drink is smooth and creamy.
Pour into a large glass to serve.

Serves 1 (or 2 small servings)
