Lemonade is a summer staple in my kitchen. It’s just the right blend of tart and sweet to be perfectly refreshing on a hot day. It also pairs well with the fresh fruits and berries that I like to keep on hand in my kitchen during the summer! This Passion Fruit Lemonade is a variation on traditional lemonade that you probably won’t find at your local lemonade stand. The drink is made with freshly squeezed lemon juice and passion fruit puree, giving it the sweet-tart flavor that you expect to find in lemonade along with a delicious floral note from the tropical passion fruit.
For the passion fruit portion of this recipe, you have a couple of options. You can juice your own passion fruits, which involves pressing their plum through a strainer to remove the seeds then sweetening the remaining liquid (not difficult, but you’ll need fresh passion fruits!), or you can buy passion fruit juice. There are places where you can buy frozen passion fruit puree or juice and there are bottled versions available. Ceres is a brand of passion fruit juice that I recommend. In this recipe, I typically use Finest Call Passion Fruit Puree because it is made with plenty of real juice and has a good flavor. Aunty Lilikoi’s Passion Fruit Syrup is also great brand, if you can find it or get a friend to bring it back from Hawaii for you! The syrup and the puree are slightly thicker than the juice, so if you are using juice in the recipe below, use twice the amount of puree called for.
Since the lemonade has a tropical flavor, I recommend going a little tropical with the presentation and garnishing the drink with some tropical umbrellas or fresh pineapple wedges! If you want to turn this into an adult beverage, you can add a splash of coconut or passion fruit rum to each serving – and then check out my new site, Modern Tiki – for more tropical cocktail ideas.
Passion Fruit Lemonade
1 cup water
1 cup sugar
1 cup lemon juice, freshly squeezed
1/4 cup passion fruit puree
1 cup water
ice
In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup water and 1 cup sugar. Cook over medium heat, stirring until all the sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and allow to cool to room temperature.
In a pitcher, stir together cooled sugar syrup, lemon juice, passion fruit puree and additional 1 cup water. Chill lemonade and serve over ice. Ice will dilute the drink slightly to the perfect consistency.
Recipe can be doubled.
Serves 4.
