Bites from other Blogs

Bites from other BlogsGame day snacks are usually bite sized, things that can be prepared in advance and served throughout a big game like the Super Bowl. Some people lean sweet and some people lean savory, but the truth is that game day snacks can and should be both. This week, I kept my eyes peeled for sweet and savory things that might be great at the game day table.

  • GirliChef baked up a batch of Jalapeno Cheddar Pretzel Bites that sound like they were made for game day. The bite sized, homemade pretzels are stuffed with salty cheddar cheese and slivers of spicy jalapeno. If you’re feeling bold, you can opt for larger jalapeno slices, and that is the beauty of making such a perfect game day treat yourself so that you can customize it. These pretzels are baked and topped with a sprinkle of salt, and they’re sure to be eaten up very quickly by hungry fans.
  • The Miniature Moose went sweet with these game day treats, a batch of Football Brownie Cookies. The rich chocolate treats are really brownies disguised as cookies and baked into the shape of a football. The neat thing about them is that you don’t need any cookie cutters to get the shape because the dough is actually shaped in a piece of wax paper, just like logs of slice-n-bake cookies are formed! This makes the football making process quick and easy, and really cuts down on cleanup time after you’re done baking.
  • Pizza is definitely a game day staple for many food and football fans. Instead of ordering take out, a batch of the Pizza Poppers that Closet Cooking cooked up might be more fun to eat. The bite sized poppers start out as pizza dough that is stuffed with pepperoni and mozzarella cheese. The dough is wrapped around the filling and deep fried, then dusted with parmesan cheese, oregano and garlic for a savory, salty finish. It’s all the flavor of pizza in one bite – and you can play around with the filling ingredients to feature more vegetables or different meats depending on what you like on your pizza.
  • Averie CooksRed Velvet Chocolate-Swirled Brownie Bars are something that could work for game day or for Valentine’s Day. These bar cookies are actually more like blondies than brownies, turned into red velvet with the addition of a little bit of cocoa powder and plenty of red food coloring. They’re buttery and chewy, and the bright red color of the bars is eye catching. They’re finished with a generous swirl of melted chocolate, which highlights the cocoa in the bars and also gives the finished treat a lovely contrast in colors.
  • Game day treats are known for being indulgent, so it never hurts to stick something a bit healthier onto the menu. No one will question these Whole Wheat Dark Chocolate Chip Cookies Bars from Life’s Too Short To Skip Dessert because they don’t look like “health food.” The bars are made with whole wheat flour and are packed with dark chocolate chips and walnuts. They’re still sweet and buttery, so they’re not as healthy as, say, a bunch of vegetables, but the bar cookie format means that you can cut them into bite-sized pieces and don’t have to feel guilty about eating one for dessert even after indulging in wings, chili and other snacks.
