Hershey’s S’mores Cupcake Mix, reviewed

S'mores Cupcakes
I am a huge s’mores fan. The combination of marshmallow, chocolate and graham cracker is always a good one in my book, whether it’s a traditional campfire s’more or a batch of s’mores pancakes. Naturally, when I spotted a box of the new Hershey’s S’mores Cupcake Mix on the baking aisle at the grocery store, I was curious enough to give it a try. Hershey’s is the chocolate that is traditionally used to make a class s’more, after all!

The mix is the same style as the Fun-Da-Middles type of cake mix. It includes a graham cracker crust base, a chocolate cupcake mix and a packet of marshmallow filling. The crust is put into the muffin cups first, but does not need to be prebaked. The filling is piped into the center of the cupcakes before baking and bakes right alongside the cake, so the cupcakes are ready to eat as soon as they come out of the oven. The marshmallow filling was my biggest concern for these cupcakes, since I wasn’t sure if it would stay in the center of the cake during baking.

I didn’t need to worry, however. The marshmallow filling tasted like toasted marshmallows and stayed right where I put it during baking. I used the entire packet of filling in my cupcakes, so each one had a very generous marshmallow center inside – just the way I like my s’mores.

S'mores Cupcakes

The chocolate cupcake was moist, tender and went well with the marshmallow filling. It had a good chocolate flavor to it, though it wasn’t too different from your usual chocolate cake mix cupcake. The graham cracker crust was a great idea here, since it really gave the cupcakes that s’mores flavor and added a great look to the cupcakes. It stayed in place nicely, even as the cupcakes were unwrapped. The cupcakes didn’t need frosting, but an extra smear of chocolate frosting was a nice way to finish these off and make them even more indulgent.

Overall, I was very happy with this mix. The cupcakes tasted great and definitely reminded me of s’mores. The crust was a really nice touch. I will definitely be trying a homemade version of this idea in the near future, but for a fun s’mores treat, this mix is well worth it.

Made these, with some improvements, for my daughter’s birthday and they loved them! Use melted butter instead of oil and buttermilk in place of the water. The batter will be thicker than usual but they turn out super moist and have a better flavor.
