Limited Edition Holiday Peeps: Gingerbread, Peppermint and Sugar Cookie, reviewed

Holiday Peeps 2012
Peeps were one of my favorite Easter candies when I was a kid and I still look forward to those brightly colored marshmallow chicks and bunnies around Easter. Over the past few years, Peeps have been branching out into other holidays with different shapes and even different flavors for different occasions! I couldn’t resist picking up their three holiday offerings this year when I saw them at the store: Gingerbread, Candy Cane and Sugar Cookie.

Gingerbread Peeps

The Gingerbread Peeps are shaped like gingerbread and have a spicy gingerbread flavor to them. They had just the right amount of spice to make it clear that they were gingerbread, but not so much that the cinnamon overwhelmed the sweetness of that marshmallow. I also loved the look – they look amazing when used as a holiday garnish, even if you’re not planning to eat them. They also work extremely well in hot chocolate, where that extra spice is very nice in a warm drink.

Candy Cane Peeps!

The Candy Cane Peeps are chick-shaped and dipped in a very thin layer of dark chocolate. They’re white, with red flecks that give them a pepperminty look. They taste like the marshmallow version of a York peppermint patty, with a slightly milder peppermint flavor. The chocolate coating is crisp and a great contrast to the marshmallow in both texture and flavor. These were pretty darn addictive, especially if you like mint.

Sugar Cookie Peeps

The Sugar Cookie Peeps are also traditionally shaped Peeps, and had a milk chocolate coating on the bottom. They were flavored like sugar cookie dough, which means that they smelled a bit like butter and vanilla. Actually, the smell was disconcertingly close to that of an actual sugar cookie. The marshmallows had some sugar cookie flavor, but the aroma was much stronger than the flavor overall. They weren’t bad, though I will admit that I didn’t care for the milk chocolate coating on these, as I thought it kind of took away from the sugar cookie flavor (since I top sugar cookies with frosting, not chocolate).

I’d pick up a few extra packs of gingerbread and peppermint before I’d buy more of the sugar cookie peeps, mostly because I think they work a lot better in hot chocolate than the sugar cookie peeps and I drink a lot of hot chocolate this time of year. If you’re a Peep fan, however, it is worth trying all three holiday flavors to pick your own favorite.

Just last week I picked up a couple of packs of chocolate mousse flavored Peeps in the shape of reindeer. I haven’t tried them yet, but I’m sure they’d be great in a steaming mug of hot cocoa.

I was excited to read your reviews, love me some Peeps, but all I can find around here are the chocolate moose ones, boo. Will keep looking, thanks for the heads-up on the new flavors/shapes.
