Addendum is an annex to the restaurant Ad Hoc in Yountville, California. Ad Hoc is the most casual of Thomas Keller’s restaurants, serving one set 3-course menu every night. All of the food is served to each table family-style, and you don’t know what is going to be on the menu until that day. The food is always good and it’s a very fun concept. The restaurant is only open for dinner, however, and plenty of people who would love to be able to stop in for lunch.
Addendum is the answer to this little problem.
It is a small building out in back of Ad Hoc where you can pick up a boxed lunch featuring either fried chicken or barbecue pork, two of Ad Hoc’s most popular menu items. The lunch includes two small sides and a piece of cornbread, as well as a fairly generous serving of the main protein, for $16.50. Addendum is only open from 11:00am-2:00pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday only.
I stopped in for some of Ad Hoc’s famous fried chicken when I was passing through Yountville and needed to eat something before doing a little wine tasting. The chicken is fried to order, so it took 15-20 minutes to get my order once I placed it. The bbq is slow cooked in advance and probably comes out a bit faster. The portion was a good size for lunch – and enough to share if you’re looking for a snack, rather than a big meal. It consisted of half a breast, a chicken thigh and a drumstick. I really liked the coating on the fried chicken, which is light, crispy and just savory enough to make it addictive, and the chicken was nice and juicy. My sides were swiss chard and potato salad, as well as a piece of their honey cornbread. They were also good, but the chicken was unquestionably the star here.
The bbq is going on my list for next time, as I’ve had their bbq before at Ad Hoc and know that it is also delicious. I visited Addendum on a rainy day and it was just about deserted, but I have been told that during the summer the line can get very long, so keep that in mind if you’re pressed for time at lunch. If you want four or more lunches, you can place and order ahead by e-mail that can help speed things up a bit. There is plenty of seating at picnic benches around the annex building, whether you are waiting for an order or looking for somewhere to enjoy your box lunch.
