I will admit that I thought that I had come up with some creative pancakes over the years. I particularly like my Red Velvet Pancakes and my Halloween-themed Vampire Pancakes, but I tend to keep my pancakes looking like, well, pancakes. I was definitely inspired to start thinking outside of the box when it comes to pancakes after checking out Jim’s Pancakes. Jim is a dad-turned-pancake-master who turns pancakes into art and architectural wonders for his daughter’s breakfast. He has everything from 3D T-Rex and Ferris Wheel Pancakes to a convincing plateful of bacon and egg look-a-like pancakes.
The secret to Jim’s success can be summed up in two words: squeeze bottles. By putting the pancake batter into fine-tipped squeeze bottles, you can actually use them like a pen. Smaller pastry bottles (available at craft and pastry supply stores) allow you the most finesse with your designs. A little food coloring here and there helps out, too. Pancakes cook fast, though, so you have to just go for it when you draw. If you want to try your hand at some designs, just remember that even if the first few don’t turn out looking perfect, they’ll still taste good!
