Dreyers’s Samoas Ice Cream, reviewed

Dreyers’s Samoas Ice Cream

Samoas are my favorite flavor of Girl Scout cookie, so the limited edition Dreyers (Edy’s, on the East Coast) Samoas Ice Cream immediately caught my attention when I walked by the freezer case at the grocery store. The ice cream – which is available in regular and in Slow Churned Light – is a limited edition flavor that Dreyer’s releases annually from January to April, paralleling the real Girl Scout cookie season.

The flavor consists of a caramel vanilla ice cream with chunks of chopped up Samoas cookie in it. The regular Grand version also has swirls of chocolate fudge, while the Light variety leaves that extra out. The ice cream is smooth and creamy (even the Light), and has a relatively subtle caramel flavor. It is a great contrast for the cookie chunks. I’ve had batches the of ice cream that were a little bit lacking in the cookie department, but most batches have lots of cookie chunks. The only thing that would make it even better is if there were a little toasted coconut in the ice cream, too.

For thin mint lovers, there is a Thin Mint Ice Cream from Dreyers, too

This looks great, samoas are my favorite kind of girl scout cookie. I’ll have to keep an eye out for it in the store.

I tried the thin mint a few weeks ago and was underwhelmed. I *LOVE* thin mint cookies, but only just liked this ice cream. Won’t be buying it again (but liked it enough to consume what I had bought).

I tried these a few years ago and wasn’t impressed. The ice cream was good, but the cookies tasted old and were fairly soggy. Maybe I got an old batch, though.

I had some last night. The cookie bits were appropriately crunchy/chewy. I enjoyed it, but a little goes a long way. It gets overwhelming if you scoop out too much (at least for me!).

I grew up on the east coast and I ALWAYS new it as Edy’s. Then I moved to Seattle and realized it was the same product. I think it is so weird. I googled it and found out it was the TWO names of the owners. They changed the name to Edy’s on the East Coast so that they would not get confused with Breyer’s. Breyer’s and Dreyer’s sound pretty similar for two ice cream companies. That would definitely not legally be allowed today.

Oh hey, Anticiplate answered my question, I was gonna say . . . didn’t Edy’s make an officially licensed girl scout ice cream?
