Kerrygold Irish Cream Liqueur, reviewed

If you know the name Kerrygold, it’s probably because you’re familiar with their delicious Irish butters or their tasty Irish cheeses. The dairy company has been making these dairy-based products for decades, but more recently introduced an even more decadent product to its lineup: Kerrygold Irish Cream Liqueur. The liqueur is in the same category as Baileys and is made with a combination of cream, Irish whiskey, chocolate and vanilla. It was introduced in 2014 and has been increasing in availability ever since, though it is currently a bit easier to find around St Patrick’s Day than any other time of the year.

The liqueur is rich and smooth, with the consistency of fresh cream and plenty of fresh dairy notes in the base, as well. It has a very balanced chocolate flavor and just the right amount of sweetness to highlight the vanilla without making the liqueur cloying. At 17% ABV, it has the same amount of alcohol as Bailey’s, but the whiskey flavor seems a bit smoother and blends into the other flavors very well. It’s very indulgent and quite delicious. It can be used in any recipe or cocktail that calls for Irish cream. It can also be served over ice or drizzled over ice cream. As it is cream based, it should be stored in the refrigerator once opened.

Adding a cream-based liqueur to their offerings actually makes a lot of sense for a dairy brand, as they are already known for the quality of their milk products and consumers will (correctly) assume that it means high quality dairy goes into the liqueur. I think they nailed it with this liqueur and would certainly keep it in stock at my house for sipping and baking.
