Witch’s fingers are a classic Halloween cookie and, while I don’t generally make them myself, I’ve eaten more at Halloween parties than I can count. They’re shortbread or butter cookies that are formed into a knobby, finger-like shape, given small lines for joints to add realism and finished off with a sliced almond “nail.” They’re creepy and definitely remind you of the wicked witch when you see them, so they’re perfect for Halloween.
While they’re not hard to make, it does take a bit of time shaping all those fingers. Wilton has just introduced a Witch’s Fingers Cookie Pan that does the shaping for you. Cookie pans like this one are getting more and more common, allowing you to press your dough into a mold instead of rolling, cutting or hand-forming the dough yourself. This pan has nobby, torpedo-like cavities that produce creepily detailed fingers. You can put an almond in for the nail before baking, or simply use some food coloring to dye the nail (or the entire finger, actually) the color of your choice once the cookies are done. The pan is nonstick and makes eight fingers at a time, meaning that you’ll probably need to make your cookies in batches. Then again, you could simply make a few fingers to throw in with a big plate of regular cookies, which might even be a bit scarier at a Halloween party.
