Wilton Cake Caddy

cake caddyImagine that you have made a cake or some cupcakes for a friend’s party. You spend hours baking and decorating only to realize that you need to pack up the cake and get it to the party in one piece.

Transporting cakes can be a pain in the you-know-what. You have to worry about keeping the icing from getting smushed, keeping the cake from tipping over in the car and, depending on the type of cake, keeping it cool while you transport it. One way to make the process easier is to enlist someone to hold onto the cake while you drive it to its final destination. Another option is to invest in a good, sturdy cake caddy.

For years, I’ve been relying on a very old, very touchy Tupperware cake caddy. I won’t get into all of its flaws (lack of a handle, almost impossible to seal, etc.), but the fact that I could rest a cake on the floor of my car without worrying about it sliding around was not enough to compensate for them. Recently, I decided that I had had enough of the struggle with the old caddy and upgraded to a new Wilton Cake Caddy. The lid is airtight and slides on easily, locking with three sturdy snaps around the base. A handle is on top of the lid, making it easy to handle, and the base is wider than the cake, so it is more stable than some other designs.

So far, I’ve used it for cakes (up to 10-inches) and cupcakes (it holds 1 1/2 dozen) and am just loving it. Switching from my old, old caddy to the new one made me realize what I was missing out on – and it ended up giving me an excuse to do some extra baking, since I needed to give the caddy a test run.

  2. I saw a similar product on the Rachael Ray show last week, that can hold up to 36 cupcakes.

  3. Hi Nicole! I’ve tried a few of your recipes and all turned out awesome. I’ve linked you too. Thanks!

  4. Nicole, have you ever seen silver, vintage cake covers? My friend has one her mother gave her and it’s very handsome. I threw away all my plastic ones and am debating whether to buy the vintage type (probably off eBay) or the Wilton caddy you posted. The Wilton one is definitely more practical, but the silver ones (there are a few on eBay) are nice enough to keep on the counter.

  5. What a timely post… I’m in the market to replace my own ‘vintage’ Tupperware caddy (a hand-me-down that may be older than I am) and I was overwhelmed by the options these days. Nice to find one that’s reasonably priced AND meets/exceeds expectations.

  6. I have this cake carrier, and I love it for toting round layer cakes without fear. But I also have two of these: http://www.wilton.com/yearbook/productinfo/theultimate3in1caddy.cfm so I can transport two dozen cupcakes. I was given another cupcake carrier (not Wilton) that held two dozen cupcakes, and it was cheap and flimsy, so I returned it to the store in exchange for the Wilton. (I was also given six Cup-A-Cake holders as a gift. http://www.containerstore.com/browse/Product.jhtml?CATID=74067&PRODID=10015475&searchId=9052533&itemIndex=3 Yes, I am a baking dork.)

  7. Anna – Silver sounds gorgeous. I’ll have to keep an eye out for one. I would describe my old one as “mustard yellow” which, in addition to not being nearly as glamorous as silver, is actually a bit of an unappetizing color for a cake carrier!

  8. I have this cake carrier, and although it’s much better than nothing, I find it to be very poorly designed and will buy a new one as soon as I find a better option. The thing is absolutely massive, so massive that it’s always hard to find a spot for it in the fridge, and it wouldn’t fit in any of my regular cabinets (I have to store it in my deep pantry). With all this enormity, you would think it could hold an enormous cake or number of cupcakes, but that is not the case. The sloping sides and just overall design of it give you very little inside room when you consider how much outside room it takes up. I hope to find a container with straight (or almost so) sides and a top that’s more flat so I can stack other things on top. This one works, but is annoying in its inefficiency.

  9. I have the Wilton caddy and love it. My darling husband put the plate in the dishwasher and it warped. Still useable but would love a replacement. Any one have a source. I checked the Wilton website but did not find anything.

  10. I recently purchased this and I absolutely love it!
