5 Reasons to Check out LA Times’ The Taste

Great Reasons To Check Out LA Times' Food Festival, The Taste
The Taste is one of the most exciting food events in Los Angeles, sponsored by the LA Times and held annually on the Paramount Studios back lot. I’ve been privileged to attend a few times and, if you’re in LA and haven’t been yourself, here are a few reasons to check it out!

#5 The location is the first exciting thing about this event. It’s fun to walk around on the historic backlot, see all the store/building facades and pretend you’re in a movie for a bit. The water tower makes a great backdrop for photos, too.

#4 When you walk in, you’ll be confronted with a wall of excited people and a chalkboard where some visitors have made their mark. Pose for a selfie. And don’t worry about the crowd because the lot is huge and there is plenty of food to go around. The buzz of the crowd makes it exciting – and believe me when I say that some festivals just seem crowded, not exciting, when you walk in. Just keep walking back and hit the stations at the back first, then circle back to the front!

#3 The demos are a lot of fun. There are cooking and mixology demos from well-respected chefs and bartenders. You can pick up a few new techniques, learn some new recipes, ask any questions you might have and, most importantly, taste the food being showcased.

#2 The people who attend are great – including the vendors. It’s fantastic to talk to chefs about the food they’re putting out and about their new/upcoming projects up close. It really gives you an opportunity to connect with the food. The other guests are fun to make friends with, as well. After all – everyone who is here loves food.

#1 The food is outstanding and is the most important reason to go. From longtime favorites to upcoming concepts, you’ll see food from all across the board here. Just about everyone is doing something original for the event, so the odds are good that you won’t be eating the same thing you had the last time you visited.

There are sweets, savories and cocktails to enjoy. Cocktails? Yes, there are spirits samplings and wine tastings to pair with your snacks. Beer, too! I try to make a list of my favorites so I can visit the restaurants asap or pick up the wine at stores. Just about everyone will have a card or a flyer available, and taking notes is advised.
