Eagle Brand Chocolate Sweetened Condensed Milk, reviewed

Eagle Brand Chocolate Sweetened Condensed Milk, reviewed
Sweetened condensed milk is made by cooking milk to remove more than half of the water from it, then sugar is added to sweeten and thicken the product. Sweetened condensed milk’s creamy, caramelized is a great base for other flavors to be added – such as coffee in Thai coffee, chocolate in fudge or citrus in key lime pie – but it is not typically flavored itself. I was very surprised to see a can of Eagle Brand Chocolate Sweetened Condensed Milk sitting on the shelf alongside the “regular” sweetened condensed milk! The can noted that the flavor was a limited edition, which made me wonder if this was the first of other new sweetened condensed milk flavors that we might see in the future.

The chocolate sweetened condensed milk is chocolate flavored, not made with real chocolate. This is largely because they want to keep the consistency and functionality of the product the same as traditional sweetened condensed milk so that the product can be used in the same types of recipes. While chocolate is not always my favorite food flavoring (some chocolate flavorings are simply unpleasant), it works very well here. The sweetened condensed milk has a good chocolate flavor that reminds me of creamy hot cocoa with marsmallows and it is delicious straight out of the can. It has a warm chocolate color to it that also reminds me of hot chocolate. It’s a fun alternative to regular sweetened condensed milk for coffee drinks and baked goods that already have a bit of chocolate to them, so it is well worth picking up a can to try.

I too picked this up and wondered what to do with it. The first recipe that came to mind was what you linked up (although we called them Hello Dollies). But then I thought I’d find another use by searching the Internet and came up empty. So glad you posted.

We have been using this to make our Irish Cream as an alternate to the regular sweetened condensed milk. Imagine my dismay when we went looking for it this year and it looks like it has been replaced with Hazelnut and Pumpkin Spice flavors. We also tried the Caramel flavor but nobody seems to like it but me and I can’t drink a whole recipe by myself.

Absolutely love this stuff, concocted my own chocolate frosting recipe which is to die for, almost as good as the one I’ve been using for the past 35 years
