Ice cream sandwiches are the kind of frozen treat that you always looked forward to as a kid. Whether you got them from the ice cream truck or found a box stashed in the freezer, the combination of cookies and ice cream was always a good one. Ice cream sandwiches don’t seem to be a go-to treat for adults as often as kids, but they probably should be because they can really be an outstanding way to enjoy ice cream. Cookies & Cream: Hundreds of Ways to Make the Perfect Ice Cream Sandwich is a whole cookbook that is dedicated to the art of making great ice cream sandwiches – and making sure that they become a staple in your house when you’re looking for a cold treat.
The book starts with a very comprehensive introduction to the components of ice cream sandwiches, namely ice cream and cookies. You can always start your ice cream sandwiches with store bought ice cream, but you will have many more flavor options (and the satisfaction of doing something completely from scratch) if you start with homemade ice cream in addition to homemade cookies. There is also an introduction to the process of making ice cream sandwiches, including tips for working with different types of cookies to ensure that you get the best results and a guide to matching cookie and ice cream flavors. The rest of the book is dedicated to the recipes and is divided into categories like Classic, Boozy, Fruity and Sinful combinations. Both the cookies and ice cream recipes will stand on their own, as well, so this really is like getting two books in one.
The recipes are very clearly written and easy to follow along with, even if you don’t have a lot of experience making ice cream. It will help, however, if you have an ice cream maker to ensure that you get the best results from your recipes. The names of the sandwich combinations are tempting, but the beautiful photos of all these cookies are even more mouthwatering – especially since they look a lot better than anything you could hope to find at an ice cream truck. The additional bonus of making your own ice cream sandwiches is that they keep very well, so you can make up a big batch or two of your favorite flavors and stash them in the freezer for hot days when you want a sweet treat to cool down with.
