  • St Patrick’s Day was yesterday, but you don’t need to wait for a holiday for an excuse to try Andrea’s Recipes‘s Guinness Gingerbread. The dark, chocolaty flavor of the stout beer adds a lot of depth to the other flavors in the gingerbread, which include cocoa power, ginger, cinnamon and pepper, as well as molasses and brown sugar. This is a great everyday cake that doesn’t need any frosting to finish it off.
  • The Yeasted Pear Tart with Chamomile Anglaise from Pastry Studio sounds like something that might be on the menu at an upscale restaurant. The elegant dessert is surprisingly easy to make, presenting ripe pears in a lightly sweetened no-knead dough that is light and cake-like. An easy creme angalise flavored with chamomile tea is a nice complement to the dish and adds a fresh flavor that plain whipped cream just can’t offer.
  • For a low maintenance, but hearty breakfast, Inn Cuisine‘s Spiced Oatmeal Pudding Bake is just the thing. The bake is something a bit like baked rice pudding, made with heart-healthy oatmeal that is baked in a casserole dish with cottage cheese, milk, eggs, sugar and spices. The eggs and cottage cheese help to thicken the oatmeal and boost the protein content of the dish, and what you end up with is a very rich tasting, filling breakfast to start the day – and it can all be cooked in the oven after only a few minutes of mixing.
  • I know that some people still think that cupcakes are more for kids than grownups, but there is no question that the Jello Shot Cupcakes from I heart Cuppycakes are for grownups only. The cakes are made with a vanilla cake that is soaked in a strawberry coconut rum mixture (made with strawberry jello mix for flavor and color) and are garnished with glass-like cubes of jello. The cupcakes look great and would would be a blast to serve at a casual summer party.
  • I have a copy of the Silver Palate Cookbook, and it is one of those books that you just can’t go wrong with. Their Banana Bread, for instance, is very good, as Obsessed with Baking can attest to. The bread is less dense than many typical banana breads, and packs in lots of banana flavor, since it uses plenty of mashed bananas and not very many other add-ins. It works with both whole wheat and all purpose flour, or a combination of the two.
