- First on my list this week are the Redheads at Oatmeal Cookie Blog. The blog is all about oatmeal cookies, which gets a big thumbs up in my book to begin with, but these particularly cookies caught my eye because of their name. Redheads are spicy cookies with 5 types of ginger (ginger hair/red hair = redheads). They sound great – not that I’d be biased towards redheads in general, of course…
- Anyone who likes chocolate peanut butter will probably fall in love with the Chocolate Peanut Butter Layer Cake from Smitten Kitchen at first sight. The dessert, which is from the cookbook Sky High: Irresistible Triple-Layer Cakes, starts with a rich, moist chocolate layer cake and is frosted and filled with an absolutely decadent cream cheese peanut butter frosting. The finishing touch is a layer of chocolate peanut butter glaze, artfully dripping down the sides of the cake.
- Another chocolate peanut butter creation is a bit simpler, but no less delicious. Two Fat Als made Oversized Peanut Butter Cups, a supersized version of the candies that I made last holiday season. I think that bigger is definitely better when it comes to these! Each one delivers a great burst of peanut butter and dark chocolate. They’re big enough to share – not that you’d need to if you make a whole batch.
- Sometimes, when I start to bake bread in the afternoon, any actual dinner cooking is forfeit to eating fresh bread, along with fruit, cheese or some other bread accessory. The same thing happened to Healthy and Gourmet while baking Caramelized Red Pepper and Garlic Flatbread, although the pizza-like bread is definitely more like an actual meal than your average baguette. The topping consists of bell peppers, cooked until caramelized and tender, as well as lots of garlic and a healthy sprinkle of grated cheese.
- Chocolate covered or chocolate dipped pretzels are dangerously addictive, with their combination of salty and sweet. It’s not hard to make the jump from chocolate dip to actually incorporating pretzels in a chocolate recipe. The Recipe Girl did this in a batch of Pretzel- Toffee Chip Brownies. They didn’t stay quite crispy, but stood up to the thick brownie batter well and added a great hint of salt to the mix.
- Finally, I’ve been a bit neglectful in mentioning the newest round of Blogging By Mail, organized by the absolutely wonderful Dispensing Happiness. This event for bloggers matches up people across the world for a postal exchange of foodie goods. Sign ups close on September 21.

September 10, 2008Thanks for mentioning the blogging by mail — I didn’t know about that but it look so wonderful! Also, I think that the link to the oversized peanut butter cups may not be working. Thanks so much for writing them up, though, they were delicious and your recipe was perfect!

September 10, 2008FYI, the link to the Pretzel Brownie recipe at The Recipe Girl doesn’t seem to work properly. I had to go to that site and drill down for the recipe. Thanks for a great blog as always!!
