Baking Bites for Craftsy: Semi-Naked Cake Frosting Techinque

DIY Semi-Naked Cake
As someone who enjoys low-maintenance cake decorating, naked cakes are one of my favorite styles of cake to make. Naked cakes are layer cakes that have frosting between the layers, but not on the sides of the cake. They give you a nice cake-to-frosting ratio and are very on-trend right now. But they have a very casual look to them that you might not want for every occasion. If you need to give your naked cake a more polished look, consider a semi-naked cake instead. Over at the Craftsy blog (it’s free!) I’ve got a tutorial on How to Ice a Semi Naked Cake and you can learn to get the look yourself!

I used my Valentine’s Day Funfetti Cake as the base for my cake in the tutorial. You’ll need two batches of the layer cake batter to make a three-layer cake like that one. I used 6-inch and 4-inch pans for the top tiers of cake. While you can use any frosting – and chocolate frosting is delicious with this particular vanilla cake – I recommend vanilla or cream cheese frosting because white really lets the colorful sprinkles pop.
