Brownie Batter Oreos, reviewed

Brownie Batter Oreos

If you’ve ever made a batch of brownies – or stood in the kitchen watching someone make a batch of brownies – you’ve tasted brownie batter. The thick, fudgy batter smells like chocolate heaven and dipping in a finger, spoon or spatula is just too great a temptation for most of us to resist. While “cake batter” turned into a popular flavor for ice creams and other goodies, “brownie batter” is a flavor that didn’t quite make the cut. Nabisco’s newest limited edition Oreo flavor seeks to bring this flavor back into the spotlight with their new Brownie Batter Oreos. These cookies combine classic Oreo wafers with a dark, chocolate filling that is brownie batter-flavored.

Since brownie batter typically contains raw egg, Nabisco simply couldn’t pipe dollops of uncooked batter in between their cookies. This filling is nearly black in color and has a consistency very similar to that of classic Oreo cream filling. The cookies smell intensely chocolaty when you open the package, hitting a note somewhere between brownie batter and chocolate frosting. They have a bittersweet cocoa flavor to them and the filling really seems to blend in well with the chocolate wafer cookies. They feel a bit less sweet than regular Oreos, but really cry out for a glass of milk to cut through all that cocoa. I don’t think that they hit the brownie batter mark in terms of flavor, but these deliver a lot of extra chocolate flavor and I’m sure that they will find plenty of fans with chocolate-lovers who want more chocolate (and less sweet) from their Oreos.

I think that these are perfect for baking, so I recommend chopping them up and adding them into a batch of my Cookies n’ Cream Brownies or Chocolate Cookies n’ Cream Cookies.

Normally I am not a solid chocolate lover. In other words, never set a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting in front of me, I will not eat it. Nor will I eat a chocolate candy bar without having nuts or peanut butter mixed in. However, brownies are an exception. While I still do prefer them with nuts or something mixed into them, I could totally enjoy a plain brownie. Which means I will love these. As for the cake batter oreos, I LOVE cake batter but I was disappointed in the cake batter oreos. They tasted very fake.

    Just bought some of these.

I think they smell AWFUL. Like, almost didn’t want to even try one because the smell was gross (kind of reminded me of scented markers from when I was a kid, in a bad way).

However, they luckily taste much better than they smell and I actually think they do taste a LOT like brownie batter. They’re bit *too* chocolate-y for me, so the husband will get to finish the package (poor guy!).
