Trader Joe’s has a store brand of the popular Biscoff spread that is simply called cookie butter. It’s available in smooth and crunchy varieties, and both are popular with lovers of the sweet, addictive brown sugar-flavored spread. Recently, Trader Joe’s introduced a version that will appeal to fans of the classic spread and to chocolate lovers, Speculoos Cookie & Cocoa Swirl. This spread has a cookie butter base that is swirled with dark chocolate stripes, so you’ll get some of each flavor when you dig into the jar with a spoon or a knife.
When I first picked up a jar, I was a little bit worried that the flavor of the chocolate swirls would overwhelm the cookie butter only portion of the spread. It turns out that the flavors work together beautifully and neither one dominates the other, and the plain cookie butter might even have a slight edge over the cocoa portion. You can really taste the brown sugar and that unique hint of spice that makes Biscoff and similar spreads so delicious, and you also get a hint of deep cocoa that takes the edge off of the sweetness usually associated with cookie butter. It’s a great combination and easy to eat right out of the jar.
This spread can be used in just about any application that plain Biscoff spread can be, from hot chocolate to cookies, so if you have a chance to pick up a jar, you can really get creative with it. Or, you can give in to temptation and simply eat it with a spoon.
