The Boozy Baker

The Boozy BakerThe Boozy Baker is a cookbook dedicated to those who want to have their cocktail and eat it, too. It is a cookbook that is full of more than 75 recipes for cakes, cupcakes and other baked goods that are spiked with spirits from Brandy to Southern Comfort. It offers grown up twists – and in many cases more sophisticated flavor profiles – to many recipes that you would find in different forms in other cookbooks.

It is always fun to flip through the pages of a new cookbook, looking for recipes, and this one manages to be a bit more fun than usual. It’s not because the photos are mouthwatering (which they are), but because the recipes all seem like the would be perfect for a special occasion and you can’t help but start to think of what events would give you an excuse to try this or that. The recipes are clear and well written, so they are easy to follow whether you are an experienced baker or a novice. This is a also true of the cocktail recipes included in the book, which mostly make great pairings with the baked recipes. The amount of alcohol in each recipe varies, so you’ll find cookies where it just adds a hint of flavor and bakes out (as vanilla extract might do in a regular cookie recipe) and Beer Profiteroles where the flavor is much more up front.

Like so many cookbooks, this one is full of inspiring ideas that you can use on other baking occasions when you’re not making a recipe from the book. Alcohol is not frequently included in baking recipes, but there are so many liquors out there that you do actually have a wide variety of flavors available if you take advantage of them. For instance, after reading through these recipes you might decide to play around with different liquor options the next time you set out to make a tiramisu, or find that the chocolate frosting you just whipped up could do with a splash of triple sec to give it an orange flavor and a little more depth than it had before.

I’ll have to see if I can track this one down at my library. Weirdly, I’m not big on drinking booze but quite like the added dimension it gives to my baked goods. One of my favorite frostings is the Baileys buttercream I came up with to pair with coffee cupcakes. Delicious!
