Breakfast on the Go, at Starbucks

I always eat breakfast in the morning, whether I make something at home or pick something up with a cup of coffee while I’m on the go. I’m kind of a sucker for a good bowl of oatmeal, so when I heard that Starbucks was introducing an oatmeal option for breakfast, I knew that I would have to give it a try the next time the opportunity came up. The oatmeal at Starbucks is basically your standard instant oatmeal. It comes from a packet and the baristas mix it up with some hot water in a single serving cup (with a lid, which makes it very easy to travel with). I wasn’t impressed with the oatmealĀ  in and of itself, but I did like the fact that it came with packets of dried fruits, chopped nuts and brown sugar to dress it up. I actually think that a pump of the coffee shop’s caramel syrup would be wonderful in this, as well.

The pastry case has some new options in addition to the oatmeal, too, all intended to be healthier choices than a chocolate-filled croissant or donut. One in particular caught my eye: the Multigrain Roll. The roll itself is made with “seven hearty grains and seeds” and is pretty good. Even better is the fact that it comes with a single-serving packet of Justin’s Maple Almond Butter to spread on. The almond butter is part of a line of single-serving gourmet peanut butters that I first tried a while back, and it was great to see them in such an accessible place. The almond butter makes the roll excellent, and with the combination of protein and carbs, a breakfast option I’ll probably have a few more times when I’m not able to fix myself something at home.

  1. That roll looks so good, esepcially with the almond butter. I just bought some almond butter for the first time and LOVE it. I go to our local whole foods store just to buy some rolls from their salad bar, they look a lot like these you had a Starbucks. I love whole grains and lots of them. Yum.   2. I used to work at a coffee shop (though not a Starbucks), and since I was an opener, I’d bring in a pack of plain instant oatmeal to whip up at work for breakfast. My favorite way to dress it up was with a pump of caramel and a pump of cinnamon- it tasted like a sticky bun!

  3. I find it slightly annoying that Starbucks can’t muster better than instant oatmeal. I guess they’re not really set up for a big vat of steelcut oats, but it would be a service to their customers…

  4. I agree that steel cut oats would have been wonderful. Maybe if they get enough requests – I’m certainly enough of a fan of steel cut oats that I would show up for breakfast pretty frequently if they were on the menu!

  5. Thats lovely, i’ve allready gone to starbucks since they did their oatmeal thing. i’ve been tempted to buy some oatmeal (thats) all i eat for breakfast. They also have some like rice krispy treats or somethig like that, and they also offer a protein plate… that’s pretty healthy…260cal and 12 or 14 grams of protein with some pumpking spice latte!! love it…

    The oatmeal option at starbucks will be a great addition to my on the go breakfast…now I can get a delicious, healthy, gut sticking fill in the morning with my “Double Tall Latte”

  7. I really liked the multigrain roll, but i had to pay another 50 cents additional for the almond butter x_X
