Want to get away from traditional round, square and bundt cake pans and find something more creative? Check out the Octopus Cake Pan at Williams-Sonoma. It’s not going to win any awards for practicality – unless you’re a marine biologist who likes to bake cakes for all your marine biologist buddies – but it is a beautifully put together design with lots of great details.
The demo cake, pictured below the mold, is a little overdecorated for my tastes, especially considering that the cake itself is so intricate. I would leave the cake plane or add a clear glaze (lemon juice and powdered sugar, for example) to let the natural looks come through. Another option would be to add a chocolate ganache or glaze to the entire cake, preserving the design but adding more flavor.

July 29, 2008I was given the pan as a present and this cake turns out beautifully. As it happens, I am a biologist with lots marine biology friends, and other friends who are divers, so I think it will actually get some use!! I think it would be good as a mousse or jelly mould too.
