Maple Oat Waffles

I have more than one waffle iron and I like to use the different shapes for different things. Granted, none of them are Disney waffle irons, so a Cinderella breakfast is pretty much out of the question, but the shapes do serve their purposes. The thinner waffles have less surface area and tend to be heartier. The waffles made on the Belgian waffle iron have ... Read More »

Berry Oatmeal Crumble Bars

Food blogs are some of the best places to find culinary inspiration. Magazines and cookbooks aren’t to be overlooked, of course, but when you hear someone you know (or have come to know over the years of writing) raving about a dish, it is the ultimate incentive to try it. I was recently inspired by Joe‘s post on Strawberry-Rhubarb Oatmeal Bars, which sounded summery and looked ... Wheat Free Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies

gfchocoat.JPG

I don’t do too much wheat free/gluten free baking because I don’t have much call to do so. None of my close friends or family members have a gluten intolerance and only a few avoid carbs, so I tend to bake ordinary, wheat-filled breads, cookies and cakes almost exclusively. Note the word “almost”. These cookies are wheat free, made especially for a friend whose new ... Read More »

Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies

These are, hands down, the best oatmeal chocolate chip cookies I have ever made and probably the best I have ever eaten. Granted, I actually make things that I like more than these (sometimes you feel like a muffin, not a cookie), but I have never seen someone not reach for a second cookies straight away. They are fantastic – slightly crispy on the edges ... Read More »

Pumpkin Oatmeal Bread

Despite the occasionally negative comments that I have heard about Beth Hensperger’s Bread Bible, I (so far) have always had good results with it. Last week, when I was looking for a bread to make for Thanksgiving, I flipped through the book, looking for something that would be hearty but not too heavy to accompany the big meal. I had in mind that I wanted ... Read More »

DCist’s Salty Oats

There was a great episode of Recipe for Success, a show on the Food Network, that featured the creator of a cookie called Salty Oats. They are oatmeal raisin cookies, sprinkled with salt, instead of having it mixed into the batter. Though the saltiness isn’t approaching levels to qualify this as a “salty snack”, it does bring it to the front of the palate, instead ... Read More »

Oatmeal Cookie Biscotti

The isn’t much I can say about these. The spicy taste of an oatmeal cookie with the crunchiness and longevity of a biscotti. How can you go wrong? The oatmeal gives the cookie an even lighter texture than usual, so I found that dipping these was unnecessary (though still delightful). This is definately a new variation on my usual recipes that I will use again ... Read More »

Oatmeal Sourdough

If you end up making more oatmeal than you can eat, a great thing to do is add it to bread dough. It adds moisture, heartiness and great taste and texture. Because I often add a bit of vanilla and molasses to my oatmeal, I find that it lends a bit of extra sweetness to the final bread. Sometimes I boost this with a bit ... Read More »
