Starbucks Unicorn Frappuccino, reviewed

If you have Instagram, Facebook or any other social media platform, you definitely know how popular unicorn-related items are at the moment. Unicorn items don’t necessarily have the mythical horses plastered all over them, but are inspired by the colors, glitter and sparkle that have come to be associated with them. Think Lisa Frank products from the late 80s/early 90s. Almost every item you can think of – from clothing to food – has been transformed by the trend at some point and, this week, Starbucks is jumping on the bandwagon with the release of their Unicorn Frappuccino.

Available today through the weekend, the Unicorn Frappuccino is a swirl of pink and blue colors. frappuccino has a mango creme base (which means there is no coffee in this treat) that is colored bright pink and swirled with a tart blue drizzle that really compliments the mango and makes the fruit flavor pop out more. The drink is topped with whipped cream and a dusting of sour candy sugar. The pink and blue are clearly defined when you start to sip, but turn into a pretty purple color as you drink, with the sweet-tart flavor from the blue syrup becoming more prominent. It’s fun to drink something that changes colors and flavors as you enjoy it – and it tastes pretty good, too. If you’re not a fan of mango or are strongly opposed to sweet-tart gummy candy (it’s not as strongly tart as those, just giving you a reference point), this probably isn’t the drink for you, but as I like both of those things, I’ll probably indulge in another one before the weekened is over.
