Baking Bites for Craftsy: How to Make Vol au Vents
No matter what kind of entertaining you are doing, you always need some finger foods to get the party started. Appetizers can serve as the primary fare for a casual cocktail party, or simply start off the night for a more formal gathering. They can be sweet or savory, but the ideal party foods are finger foods that don’t require a knife a fork to eat. One of my favorite ways to turn a dish into finger food is by baking up some vol au vents. These easy-to-make puff pastry cases look like buttery tart shells, with a hollow inside that can be filled with anything you can dream up. Vegetable or egg-based salads (egg salad is a great choice) can make for a very light appetizer, while pastries filled with barbecue or chicken salad can be a heartier option. The cases can also be filled with chocolate mousse, lemon curd or simply whipped cream and berries for dessert. I’m serving a a tutorial that will teach you How to Make Vol Au Vents over on the Craftsy blog (it’s free!!), so head over there for a step-by-step look at what goes into making these and start planning your next party!!

And, in case you were wondering, you can absolutely start with store bought puff pastry when you make these. It makes the prep process quick and easy, which is always helpful when you’re making a lot of food.
