Frequent shoppers at Trader Joe’s will always notice when a new product hits the shelves. As a marshmallow fan – and someone who makes lots of s’mores themed desserts – I was very pleased to see that TJ’s was finally adding marshmallows to their lineup. The marshmallows are vegan, which means that they are not made with gelatin. Gelatin is the main ingredient that I use in my homemade marshmallows to give them a fluffy, yet stable, texture. These marshmallows are stabilized with carrageenan instead, and are made with tapioca syrup, cane sugar, tapioca starch, soy protein and vanilla flavor.
I was a little disappointed when I realized that these marshmallows were vegan, as most of the vegan marshmallows I’ve had don’t quite stack up to more “traditional” marshmallows for me. These marshmallows do have a much better texture – light and fluffy, without being too dense – than some of the vegan marshmallows I’ve had, but they are a bit heavier than your average marshmallow. They have a good vanilla flavor, but I found them to be noticeably sweeter than other marshmallows, which meant that I definitely wasn’t going to sit there and snack on them. They turned out to be excellent for toasting and really held their shape well, getting a nice crust on their exterior as they sat near the flame. This makes them a very good choice for homemade s’mores and other s’mores-themed baked goods, as they’ll stand up to a good toasting in the oven or over an open flame, while still bringing in a nice toasted marshmallow flavor.
These are not a bad addition to the TJ’s summer lineup, though I would still not mind seeing some marshmallows made with gelatin on the shelf. If you are looking for a vegan marshmallow, however, these are quite good and happen to be gluten free, as well. The bag holds 10 oz of marshmallows and should make some satisfying s’mores at home.
