Baking Bites’ Top 10 Recipes of 2014

Raspberry Swirl Pound Cake

The holiday season is a great time to eat, drink and spend time with family. It’s also a great time to look ahead to the new year and reflect back on all the memories of the past 12 months. In 2014, I posted well over 150 new recipes on Baking Bites and I thoroughly enjoyed each and every one of them, but some got a little (or a lot) more attention than others. Here is a countdown of the top 10 most popular recipes of 2014, continuing a tradition I started with last year’s countdown.

10. Raspberry Swirl Pound Cake was inspired by a slice of pound cake that I had at Starbucks one day. It has a colorful, flavorful swirl of raspberry running through a dense, buttery pound cake.

Oatmeal Cookies and Crazy Crust Apple Pie

9. Chewy Coconut Oatmeal Raisin Cookies make a classic cookie recipe even chewier by adding in shredded coconut. It gives the cookies a whole extra dimension of flavor that both coconut lovers (and lovers of regular oatmeal cookies) will enjoy.

8. Crazy Crust Apple Pie is a vintage recipe I found in a notebook full of my grandmother’s old recipe cards. It’s a completely nontraditional version of an apple pie that falls somewhere between a cobbler and a pie. It’s delicious and easy to make – especially if you get nervous when you’re handing regular pie dough and want to skip the pastry.

Banana Cake and Cinnamon Scones

7. Banana Crumb Cake is better than your average banana bread because it is topped with a delicious streusel that gives it an extra boost of goodness without sacrificing any of the moist, flavorful texture that you get in other banana breads. This recipe is always a hit at brunches and is an excellent way to use up leftover bananas.

6. Cinnamon Chocolate Chip Scones are an alternative to plain scones that are only studded with dried fruit or nuts. These scones are loaded up with chocolate chips and topped with a cinnamon glaze. They are a touch more dessert-like than you average scone – but is that really a bad thing?

Coffee Macarons and Coconut Cupcakes

5. Dark Chocolate Coffee Macarons combine a dark chocolate shell with a decadent dark chocolate and coffee ganache filling for one of the most delicious macarons you’ll ever eat. This is one of my favorite recipes on this list because, although macarons do take a bit of time to make, every bite of one of these little treats is well worth the effort.

4. Impossible Coconut Custard Pie Cupcakes deliver all the flavor of coconut custard pie without the fuss – or the crust. These cupcakes make their own “crust” as they bake, meaning that you can pop them out of the wrappers for serving, but still enjoy a tender custard center in each bite.

Sugar Cookies and Coconut Muffins

3. Thick Cut Out Sugar Cookies are the perfect cookies for decorating. The flavorful dough is very easy to work with and it isn’t too sweet, which means that you can go as crazy as you want to with the icing of your choice without over-doing it. The cookies won’t spread very much in the oven, either, so they’re the perfect thing to use with complicated cookie cutters.

2. Coconut Oatmeal Muffins were my most popular coconut recipe this year and it’s not hard to see why! These muffins have a delicious combination of coconut and nutty oats, laced with plenty of vanilla and just the right touch of cinnamon. You can whip up a batch from bowl to table in about 30 minutes, so you can enjoy them any time.

Mocha Cupcakes with Coffee Buttercream

1. Mocha Cupcakes with Coffee Buttercream are cupcakes for coffee lovers like me, who sometimes actually want to taste the coffee in that chocolate cake! I particularly like this delicious coffee buttercream, which can be paired with other desserts, as well.
