Halloween is a holiday that brings out some of the most interesting shaped pans that you’ll see all year. I attribute this, in part, to the fact that some images are so intertwined with Halloween celebrations, such as jack o’ lanterns, ghosts, witches and skulls. These images tend to pop up over and over again, getting improved on and refined until we end up with some really fantastic shaped pans for Halloween baking. This Nordic Ware Mini Skull Cakelet Pan is a perfect example of a wonderfully detailed pan that you can use to make delicious cakes that double as decorations for any spooky celebrations you have planned.
The pan is made of heavy duty cast aluminum and it has six skull-shaped cavities that bake cakes perfect for one or two to share. Each cavity holds about 3/4 of a cup of batter, which is roughly double the size of a standard cupcake cavity. The pan has a ton of detail, from the ridges around the nasal cavity of the skull to dozens of individual teeth, and its nonstick finish helps ensure that you get all those details in your finished cake, too. To ensure that your cakes look as good as the pan, you should still grease your pan with oil or melted butter and dust it with either cocoa powder or flour. This will not only give you the best release possible, but that extra layer of flour or cocoa (for chocolate cakes) will help emphasize the details of the cake. These cakes should not be frosted before serving, unless you’re planning to do an elaborate day of the dead sugar skull design. Otherwise, serve them as-is or dust the with confectioner’s sugar to give them a spooky white finish.
