How to Make Your Own Cake Stands

Cake stands are a great way to present – and accessorize – your cake when you’re ready to serve it. It can be boring to use the same cake stands all the time, though. One way to change things up is to buy a variety of cake stands. The problem with this is that your pantry space and your kitchen budget get eaten up with things that you will probably only use on an occasional basis. Fortunately, it is easy to make your own temporary cake stands using things you already have in your kitchen.

You can make a simple cake stand using a large plate and a small glass or bowl turned upside down. Turning the bowl upside down generally makes for a larger base – since the top of the bowl/glass is likely to be more open than the bottom – that will give your stand more stability. The plate is simply placed on top, and by the time a cake is sitting on that plate, none of your guests will even notice that the stand is made of two pieces. You can mix and match different plates and bases. I tend to use clear bowls or glasses as the base and more colorful or decorative plates, but a colorful base can add one more pop of color to a dessert display.

The best part about this type of cake stand is that it gives me the freedom to make as large or as small of a stand as I need.  The cake pictured here is my Mini Lemon Layer Cake, a great example of an unusually sized cake that really deserves a custom stand. For a mini cake, I can use a small plate. For a batch of cupcakes, I can use a big tray. And when all my cake has been eaten, I can simply take apart the pieces and put them away for next time.

Love the ombre effect, and that the frosting color matches the flavor of the cake!

Thanks for the cake stand tip. I have a neat one that can be turned into a punch bowl… but I like the idea of assembling a smaller cake stand from materials on hand!
