Whole Grain Mornings

Posted on

Whole Grain MorningsWhole grains are a great way to start your day. Both hot and cold cereals are the first breakfast dishes to jump to mind when you start thinking of whole grains, but that doesn’t mean that they are the only options. Whole Grain Mornings is packed with delicious whole grain breakfast ideas that will really give you something to look forward to when you get out of bed.

The book begins with a comprehensive introduction that not only covers the basics of baking and the ingredients that you’ll want to stock your pantry with, but that also goes in-depth about whole grains. This information includes details about different types of whole grains, how to choose them, how to store them and how to use them. The first section of the book covers basic whole grain recipes – including granola, homemade multi-grain porridge mix and homemade pancake mix – that could very well become staples in your kitchen. The rest of the book is divided into recipes by season. This format may seem a little bit unusual for a book that is focused on breakfast recipes, but we really do change our eating habits throughout the year due to the weather, as well as when taking into account the seasonal availability of various fruits and other products. For instance, I often prefer warmer and heartier breakfasts in the winter, while opting for lighter choices in the summertime. You’ll find a great variety of both sweet and savory recipes, as well. The book also clearly separates recipes that are quicker and more appropriate for weekday mornings from recipes that are more time consuming, so that it is easier to fit the recipes that look tempting into your busy schedule.

The book is illustrated with beautiful photographs that will get your mouth watering, even if whole grains don’t always sound that exciting on their own. These recipes offer a tremendous amount of variety and some ideas that are a bit healthier – thanks to the fiber, amino acids and other nutritional bonuses found in whole grains – than your typical breakfast fare. That isn’t to say that you can’t still make a batch of classic buttermilk pancakes from time to time, but it is nice to know that there are more choices out there!
