You can’t help but smile when you pick up a donut, cupcake or other dessert that is topped off with sprinkles. That rainbow of colors makes any treat feel more fun and festive, whether you’re 5 years old of 95 years old. Sprinkles!: Recipes and Ideas for Rainbowlicious Desserts is a cookbook dedicated to the love of sprinkles, using them in everything from breakfast to dessert to introduce a little bit more fun into your day and help you work your way through all those containers of sprinkles that you stock your pantry with during the holidays.
The first thing that you need to know about sprinkles is that there are multiple types of sprinkles. From classic jimmies to nonpariels to metallic dragees to sugar confetti, you might not have paid too much attention to the array of sprinkles in the baking aisle before, but you’ll be surprised when you actually take note of how many are there. They all serve a purpose – making cupcakes and other goodies more beautiful – but different colors, shapes and sizes are typically used for different applications. You’ll start to see just how many applications there are when the book moves into the recipe section. The recipe chapters include Breakfast Sweets; Cookies, Cakes and Pies; and Snacks and Party fare. The recipes are clearly written and delicious-sounding, and even though you may associate sprinkles with “kids food,” these recipes are clearly for all ages. No one is going to say no to a batch of Belgian Pear Sugar Waffles and Birthday Cake Martinis are clearly for grown ups.
The most intriguing part of the book comes at the end, with recipes for homemade sprinkles. Sprinkles are surprisingly easy to make and a homemade batch means that you get to customize the colors, shapes and sizes of your sprinkles. It’s a fun way to spend a weekend afternoon, but it also might give you a little extra appreciation of just how easy it is to buy great looking sprinkles with little effort.
