Trader Joe’s Peanut Butter Chips, reviewed

Trader Joe's Peanut Butter Chips
Peanut butter chips are an easy way to add some extra peanut butter flavor to a batch of cookies or brownies. Trader Joe’s Peanut Butter Chips are a new item that TJ’s is stocking for the holiday baking season (and possibly longer, depending on how popular they are with consumers). I like peanut butter chips because I am a big peanut butter fan, but they’re a little bit different than chocolate chips – largely because they are not chocolate chips and they’re not made with chocolate. They’re actually a combination of peanut butter, sugar and vegetable fats that are piped into a convenient, chip-like shape. I look for peanut butter chips that have a good texture and that will infuse a solid amount of peanut butter flavor into my baked goods.

The Trader Joe’s chips are made with sugar, peanut flour (which is defatted, ground peanuts), palm oil, dry milk and emulsifier and salt. I like to see real peanuts very high up on the ingredient list in peanut butter chips! They have a very strong roasted peanut flavor to them, with a touch of salt at the end, and are much less sweet than the majority of peanut butter chips I’ve had. Since they’re so full of peanuts, they’re quite dense and have a little more crunch to them than some other peanut butter chips, though they still have a very smooth mouth feel to them if you eat them straight out of the bag. They hold they’re shape well during baking and you’ll definitely get that toasted peanut flavor in whatever you add them to. Peanut butter cookie fans will definitely want to pick up a bag or two to play around with as we get in to holiday baking season!

I don’t always remember, but when I do I try to avoid products with palm oil.

Verbatim recipe on the back of the package of TJ Peanut Butter Chips……TRADER JOES PEANUT BUTTER & CHIPS COOKIES (Makes about 24 – 30) INGREDIENTS: 1 1/2 Cups All Purpose Flour, 3/4 tsp Baking Soda, 1/2 tsp Baking Powder, 1/4 tsp Salt, 1/2 Cup Unsalted Butter, Softened, 1 Cup TJ Unsalted Crunchy Peanut Butter, 3/4 Cup White Sugar, 1/2 Cup Packed Brown Sugar, 1 Egg, 1 Tbsp Milk, 1 tsp Vanilla Extract, 1 Cup TJ Peanut Butter Chips, 1 Cup TJ Chocolate Chips, More White Sugar for rolling cookies. INSTRUCTIONS: Preheat oven to 350 F. In the large bowl of a mixer, combine the butter, peanut butter and both sugars. Beat until well blended and creamy. Add the egg, mix well and add the vanilla and the milk. Combine flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt and stir into peanut butter mixture. Mix in both chips. Dough will be crumbly. Gather together about 2 Tbsp at a time, press into a ball and roll in white sugar. Place about 2″ apart on an ungreased or paper lined baking sheet and press down lightly with the back of your hand just enough to take away the rounded shape. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until just set. Do not overbake. Allow to cool completely and the cookies will finish setting.

I heard today at my local TJ’s that they are being discontinued forever – NOOO! And are being replaced with toffee chips. I just wrote the website customer feedback page and pleaded with them not to stop making or carrying them, even just bringing them back for Christmas baking time. If enough people request it, maybe they will bring them back. Thanks!
