Bites from other Blogs

Bites from other BlogsCinnamon is a spice that I use all year round, but it is also a spice that I use a lot more during the fall because its warm, spicy flavor suits the season perfectly. I’m clearly not the only one who thinks this way either, since I saw dozens of delicious cinnamon-spiked recipes out on other blogs this week.

  • Feasting at Home‘s Apple Brown Butter Bouchons are a little bite of fall. These bouchons – which get their name from the cork-like bouchon tin that they were baked in – are a variant of the donut muffin idea that has been around for some time, where a freshly baked muffin is rolled in butter and sugar to give it the look and texture of a donut with no deep frying required. These apple versions are packed with finely diced fresh apple and seasoned with nutmeg and cinnamon. They are a very tasty way to start or end a fall day.
  • Sift and Whisk‘s Cinnamon Apple Sandwich Cookies are vanilla and cinnamon spritz cookies that are sandwiched together with a creamy apple flavored filling. The apple filling gets its flavor from apple butter, a preserve that has a strong apple flavor and a lot less liquid than you would find in pie filling, so it is an easy addition to add a hint of apple to the cookies. You can buy apple butter at many grocery stores this time of year, but you can also make homemade apple butter and spike it with cinnamon and other fall spices.
  • These Brown Sugar and Cinnamon Shortbread Cookies from The Cake Merchant are simple shortbread cookies that have plenty of cinnamon flavor. The buttery cookies are made with golden brown sugar and cinnamon, and they are topped off with extra cinnamon sugar before baking. The dough is easy to work with and is great for making cutout cookies because it doesn’t spread much, so this is a good choice for using with some of your more detailed cookie cutters.
  • At first glance, all you’ll see is the chocolate in La Peche Fraiche‘s Salted Cinnamon and Ginger Double Chocolate Cookies, but there is a lot of spice in these cookies, as well as a lot of chocolate. They have both cinnamon and candied ginger, flavors that stand out against the ultra-dark chocolate cookies just as they would in an artisan chocolate bar. These cookies definitely require a glass of milk, but if you want to get a little creative, you could also sandwich them together with a big scoop of vanilla or cinnamon ice cream.
  • The Cinnamon Oatmeal Cream Cheese Bars that Bake or Break made is the kind of recipe that you’ll probably come back to again and again. This is partly because the cinnamon, oatmeal and cream cheese combination is such as good one, but it is also because these bars deliver all the richness of a cheesecake in an easy-to-make way – and they’re topped with streusel! The secret to the bars is sweetened condensed milk, which gives the filling a rich, sweet flavor just by adding one ingredient. The filling also contains vanilla, which provides a nice contrast with the spicier crust and topping.
