The Fremont Diner, Sonoma, California

The Fremont Diner looks like a greasy spoon type diner that you might drive by on your way from Napa to Sonoma, or vice versa, without giving it too much thought. If you don’t pull in for a bite to eat, however, you are missing out on one diner meal that you won’t forget. The Fremont Diner is absolutely charming, and while it does look like a classic “greasy spoon,” you’ll notice immediately that there is nothing typical about it.
The diner specializes in farm-to-table food. In this case, that means that most of what they serve is grown or raised out back or on nearby farms and pretty much everything is homemade. They even list the names of their purveyors right on the menu. This means that my classic diner breakfast of backyard eggs, bacon, toast and fries started with eggs that actually came from the backyard.
The food here is delicious, and the biggest problem you’re going to run into here is that you’ll have a hard time deciding what to order because so many things look tasty. Their very good coffee comes in big, hefty mugs and is refilled often. Their biscuits and gravy may be a Southern classic, but they have some die-hard fans. If you’re looking past breakfast, they have some awesome milkshakes and lots of great pork options later in the day. I happen to like a good diner breakfast with eggs, bacon and coffee (especially when I am on a road trip!) and can’t pass that up. Fries with breakfast may not seem that traditional, but here they are served with green onions, garlic and lemon and they are addictive no matter what time of day you eat them.
