What are Donut Peaches?

Donut Peaches
There are thousands of varieties of peaches out there, and the most common are yellow-fleshed, slightly fuzzy fruits that are round and resemble other stone fruits, like nectarines. There is a huge variety of size, shape and flavor that peaches can have, however, and it is becoming more and more common to see multiple peach varieties at grocery stores that might previously have only been available at some farmers’ markets. Donut peaches are a type of peach that has been gaining popularity over the past few years. The peaches, rather than being round, are quite flat with a stem that is almost pushed down into the center of the donut-shaped fruit. The “donut” name describes the shape of these peaches and there are actually quite a few varieties of donut peach, and many have fun names including Saturn, Jupiter and even Sweet Bagel. They are known for being very sweet with a strong, floral peach flavor, and for having a creamy flesh.

Donut peaches are in season during July and August. When shopping for them, try to pick peaches that have a slight give to their flesh and a strong, sweet aroma. They can be baked with, just like other types of peaches, but they are ideal for eating out of hand because of their strong, sweet peach flavor and tender flesh. When you get a ripe one, be sure to eat it as soon as possible because these peaches do not store well and will start to over-soften shortly after hitting their peak.

  1. I love these peaches! We call them ‘flattos’ in New Zealand lol

  2. These are very popular here in Spain, we call them “paraguayos” (Paraguayans, but don’t ask me why ;-D) I love their juicyness

  3. We just call them yummy here in Cochise County, AZ and eat them quick! :-)

  4. We look for these each summer and make the most of their short availability. Their sweet juiciness is delightful but keep something handy to wipe your chin whilst you enjoy them

  5. This is to me the best peach on the market. We get smaller ones with intense old fasioned juicy sweet peach flavour from China, these are white/rosy fleshed and peel uber easily just with the fingers. When I first tried one i was completely blown away. Normaly we get truly insipid watery American peaches that dont ripen properly and are brown and rotten before they do. Not with these they are a hit everytime.
Recently with have been getting huge ones from New Zealand the same colour soft velvity skin but with a bright yellow flesh, they also dont disspoint and are absolutely fabulously peachy in aroma, flavour and texture, melting in the mouth and packed with juice, the skin just comes off in big sections as you peel it. I havnt tried the cling variety of these but dont think I need to these are so good like they are. I think if breeders start mucking around with them we will lose that flavour all over again like so many of our commercial stone fruits.

I wont buy any other kind of peach ever again, I haven’t had such nice peaches since I was a child.
