Cook’s Country rates Cake Carriers

A good cake carrier is something that every home baker should have. The name suggests that they’re just for transporting cakes from point A to point B – and they are – but they’re also great airtight containers for storing everything from layer cakes to cookies even when keeping the goodies just around your house. A cake carrier should have plenty of room for even tall layer cakes to fit without their frosting coming into contact with the sides of the container, it should be easy to open and close securely and it should be easy to carry.

Cook’s Country knows how important cake carriers can be and put some to the test to pick out their favorite carriers in their Dec/Jan 2011 issue. Their top pick is the Progressive Collapsible Cupcake and Cake Carrier, which not only folds up to be relatively flat for storage, but includes an insert that allows it to hold up to 24 cupcakes in addition to 9-inch layer cakes. The carrier also made my holiday list of Great Gift Ideas for Bakers this year! They also recommend the Dr. Oetker Cool Box, a carrier that can be fitted with a reusable ice pack that will keep goodies cool – and frosting from melting – in hot weather, and the Wilton Cake Caddy, which has a secure and easy-to-latch lid and is half the price of the other two top models. Their last place pick was Rubbermaid’s Servin’ Sever Cake Keeper, which doesn’t have the easy-to-latch lid of other models or a handle to make it easy to carry, although it still kept the cake safe and fresh in the end.

I really love my cupcake courier (http://www.amazon.com/Cupcake-Courier-%252d-Soft-Blue/dp/B001303JZ4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1291332009&sr=8-1)

It can hold 36 cupcakes, or even a small 2-tier cake. It’s a bit bulky to store but it’s worth it for all of the things it can store/carry.

I wanted a cupcake carrier and nearly went with the courier mentioned in the previous comment but the carrier weighed a lot! I thought by the time 36 cupcakes were in there it would be a bit unwieldy so I kept looking and then saw the 24 carrier mentioned in the blog and loved the collapse idea as well as the less awkward shape for carrying it. And it is a nice size for a large cake which most carriers can’t manage. Definitely a winner. I have the Cool Box too (got it on sale with a gift card) and it is nice when you have something that needs to stay cooler. I even used it upside down for a massive trifle for the office and they ate it all in under an hour. Amazing!!

I don’t like how shallow the cups are for cupcakes on that one (or one most ones) — it’s inviting them to tip over when you shift the carrier. I have a Cupcake Courier, and it was definitely worth the investment of shelf space, ’cause I can take up to 36 cupcakes somewhere without worrying about how they’ll look when I get there.
