Donuts

Williams-Sonoma's DonutsFlipping through the pages of Donuts will definitely put you in the mood for a donut. The photos of everything from Dulce de Leche Donuts to French Crullers and Maple Bars are nothing short of mouthwatering. It’s a good thing that there are so many 24 hour donut shops out there! Then again, it’s also a good thing that this cookbook happens to be filled with dozens of easy donut recipes that you can make yourself.

If you’ve never made a donut at home before, you might be surprised by how easy they are to make. This book starts you out with the basics, listing what equipment you may (or may not) need and giving you some basic techniques to get you started, as well as two basic recipes – one for cake donuts and one for yeasted donuts – that many of the others are based on. The doughs are generally easy to work with and all you need is a deep fryer or large saucepan full of hot oil before you have fresh donuts at home.

The recipes in the book are easy to follow along with and they have plenty of variety with both classic donuts and more modern ones (i.e. Bacon Donuts!). Better still, once you’ve tried some of the recipes, you’ll have a good handle on how to make donuts and can start to experiment with some of your own flavor combinations. And if you’re worried about eating “unhealthy” deep fried foods – don’t be. Making a great batch of donuts from scratch from time to time isn’t going to blow your diet, especially if you invite a few friends over to share. Besides, the flavor of a really fresh donut without running out to the local donut shop will be well worth it.

Donuts, I haven’t made them since I was in high school and I won’t tell you how long ago that was! The only thing about donuts is their shelf life is very short so they should be eaten within a couple of days. I’ll have to purchase that book because some of my favorite reading material is cook books.

Thanks for the heads up on this book! It sounds fun–I’ve never made actual fried donuts and am dying to try!

Never made donuts. I love to eat them though. Glazed or powdered (sometimes cinnamin sugar) are the only ones I usually eat.
