  • At the end of a recent trip, What’s for Lunch Honey enjoyed a simple, yet flavorful, Bacon, Cheese and Leek Tart. The tart looks very elegant, but is actually quite easy to make. The secret is using flavorful ingredients. It starts with a puff pastry crust which is filled with an herbed cream cheese and topped off with cooked bacon, leeks cooked in bacon fat and a generous sprinkle of cheese. The tart is baked for just a few minutes to crisp up the shell and then served. It’s perfect for a casual dinner at home or as an appetizer when you’re going to be doing some entertaining.
  • Black Cherry Frozen Yogurt is a recipe I turn to again and again, and Mele Cotte‘s Cherry Basil Frozen Yogurt is a very similar recipe that adds a savory twist to the mix. The frozen yogurt itself is very simple, made with plain yogurt, a bit of sugar and lots of fresh cherries. Fresh basil is added to the simple syrup that sweetens the frozen yogurt, giving you a good basil flavor without any bits of leaves in your dessert. Infusing the syrup also means that you’re going to get a more even basil flavor in your finished dish, and you can use the same method with other fresh herbs, like mint.
  • A skillet cookie is exactly what it sounds like: a cookie baked in an ovenproof skillet. The benefit of doing this is that your cookie will tend to turn out with a crisp crust and a chewy, gooey (if you’re using chocolate, especially!) interior. Lemonpi‘s Black Forest Skillet Cookie is actually approaching brownie status with a rich chocolate cookie dough that is full of dark and milk chocolate chips and dried cherries. Skillet cookies look impressive and can be served straight from the pan. You can slice them up, or take a less formal route and scoop them out into bowls full of ice cream when the cookies are still slightly warm.
  • The Peanut Butter Mud Hen Bars from Cookie Madness are bar cookies that have got to have one of the stranger names out there. The bars are made with a peanut butter cookie dough base that is spread into a pan and topped with a layer of chocolate chips and mini marshmallows. This filling is then topped of with a layer of brown sugar meringue, and the whole thing is baked until those chocolate chips are melted and the topping is browned. You end up with a bar that is chewy, crispy and, when they’re fresh, full of melty chocolate marshmallow goodness.
  • White on Rice Couple‘s Orange Marmalade Cookies are the perfect thing to make if you are in the mood for something orange. The cookies have a whole cup of bittersweet orange marmalade in them and are topped off with a sweet orange icing that will have you coming back for seconds. The icing on top is thick and creamy, and uses both orange juice and orange zest (as well as some lemon for a bit of brightness). With frosted cookies, you usually want to frost the cookies just before serving, and this frosting will keep nicely when made in advance to be spread on as you eat.
