Duff Goldman Chocolate Cake Mix
One last product from the Duff Goldman line that I wanted to review was the Duff Goldman Chocolate Cake Mix. The brightly-boxed cake mix is one of the products from his new line of cake-decorating supplies and sells for a little more than what boxed cake mixes go for in the grocery store. I couldn’t resist trying it after I tried the ultra-expensive Ad Hoc Cake Mix, which seemed to prove that while a premium cake mix can put out a product that is outstanding, it’s still hard to justify a cake mix that is very pricey. Fortunately, the Duff Goldman mix wasn’t in the same league price-wise as the Ad Hoc stuff.

The Duff Goldman cake mix is pretty much like your standard boxed mix, where you add in water, eggs and oil to a bag of cake ingredients. The cake is moist and has a really good chocolate flavor to it, along with a very nice, dark color. It didn’t stand out too much from your average box mix, in spite of the slightly higher price, however. Still, it was tasty and easy to work with and not a bad mix to have in the back of the cupboard for when you want a quick chocolate cake fix!

    I’m curious to try out Duff’s fondant and I’ve picked up a couple of the texture sheets to play with, but the cake mixes are way to expensive here (Canada). I’ve only seen them at Michael’s craft stores for about $13 but I can find Betty Crocker and the like on sale sometimes for as little as 4 for $5. Even with a 40% or 50% off coupon for Michael’s it’s not worth it.

    I tried Duff’s yellow cake mix today and it was outstanding! It was only $7.99 at my Michael’s, but I’ll still be printing off lots of 40% coupons so I can stock up! Can’t wait to try the chocolate!

    Haha, I tried out this chocolate mix yesterday, too! I also paid just $7.99 at Michael’s, though I just couldn’t justify the &19.99 fondant.

    So I guess I can’t give a true review. But I agree it was a beautifully dark cake, and mine came out rather fudgy (too moist perhaps?)

    I’ve been meaning to grab this at the store myself. I’ll be honest it’s the sort of 70s style packaging that keeps turning my head. Luckily it sounds like it is a good mix!

    im pretty dissapointed. i had bought 2 of the cake mixes, one choc one white. the white box did not say to add 3 eggs so i didn’t. the chocolate one did. the white only rose maybe 1/3 an inch, hardly filling up halfway the 9’13 inch pan that it was supposed to. so there goes my plans to make a stand up train with box carts for my son’s 1st birthday tomrrow. i hope it at least tastes good cuz it’s gonna be a pretty darn ugly sheet cake.

    ONLY 7.99? SLIGHTLY higher? Where are you people buying your cake mixes? I pay less than $2 for Duncan Hines, often less than a Buck, and out side of the gluten free and King Arthur mixes, that’s the most expensive mix I usually see on the shelf.

    the duff buttercream fondant is great. i have lots of clients that want a fondant you can eat not throw away the clients dont mind paying a little more for a butttercream fondant that looks and tastes great also it is easier to work with.

    @Michael . . .ha ha ha, Duncan Hines? Duff is a premium professional level mix, not in the same league. Like a Yugo vs. a Cadillac

    I purchased the zebra cake mix by Duff, and at $7.99 thought it was pretty pricey. But it was for my son’s birthday, so we gave it a try. Although it didn’t rise as much as I expected, this cake did not disappoint us. It was very moist, and the taste was delicious. I certainly wouldn’t buy this every time I bake a cake, but for special ocassions, it’s definitely worth it.
