Dark Chocolate Covered Pomegranate Seeds

Dark Choc Pomegranate Seeds
Pomegranates are delicious fruits, but they are a little bit trickier to eat than, for instance, an apple, due to all of their jewel-like seeds. They’re not that easy to incorporate into recipes – particularly recipes for baked goods – unless you’re looking to use just the juice. Once, I bought a big bag of dried pomegranate seeds, planning to put them into some cookies or muffins and thinking that they would be similar to other dried fruits. They weren’t. They were mostly seed and had virtually no flavor apart from the crunch of the seed. I put aside the bag and wrote off dried pomegranate seeds.

My moratorium lasted until I saw a box of Dark Chocolate Covered Pomegranate Seeds at Trader Joe’s recently. I was tempted to see how the little seeds would do with a chocolate coating. Fortunately, it was a huge improvement! The dark chocolate was rich and flavorful, its fruitiness matching nicely with the hint of pomegranate flavor you get from the dried pomegranate. The seeds themselves work well here, too, because inside of the chocolate they take on a cacao nib-like crunch that is very pleasant. Unlike the plain dried pomegranate seeds, these work well for adding flavor and texture to things like cookies and cakes, and they’re not a bad snack for munching, either.

A friend of mine told me about these recently. I can’t wait to try them!

I’m glad you mentioned this. I found these too and tried to use them to decorate the top of a pomegranate chocolate cake (pretty sure your recipe) and heard a few “a little seedy and crunchy” complaints. I wondered if they would be less obvious IN the cake. I hadn’t tried it yet but now I won’t feel so hesitant to try that idea. Thanks.

I love pomegranate seeds! In fact, I saw someone else post about these but we don’t have a Trader Joe’s anywhere in our area, so I made my own. Here’s the recipe I came up with:

    http://www.namelymarly.com/2010/03/watch-out-trader-joes-heres-a-vegan-chocolate-covered-pomegranate-seed-recipe/

I used fresh pomegranate seeds and I love the way they “pop” when you bite into them.

That said, after reading your article I do wish we had a Trader Joe’s in the area. I might have to take a road trip to go check these out. Thanks for another great post!

Costco sells these as well. They are great for snacking on!

  • I’ve still yet to try the plain seeds yet! Almost got them for a salad recipe I saw the other day. Anything covered in dark chocolate has to be good! xxSAS

I too recently discovered these, and love them.
But I have to say that for just snacking, I love to mix them with chocolate and lightly candy covered sunflower seeds (also available at Trader Joe’s). Their flavors seem to complement eachother well, but the simple similarity in shape is also oddly similar and pleasing. I encourage you to give it a try!

I just bought these yesterday at Trader Joe’s and they are delicious, but pretty expensive for such a small container!

Trader Joe’s has the best snacks! I love that they used actual pomegranate seeds because we have these chocolate covered pomegranate things in Canada but it’s more like a jelly that’s been made with pomegranate juice, covered in chocolate.

Ohh..have to go looking for these now. We’ve found something similar at Costco, which SAYS chocolate covered pomegranate, but are basically pomegranate flavored chips. There is no actual seed in them and they taste yummy, but I’m curious about the actual seeds covered in chocolate.

I’ve had both the chocolate pomegranate from Costco and the chocolate covered pomegranate seeds from Trader Joe’s. Renn – you’re right about the Costco one just being a flavored bit. I like the one from Trader Joe’s better because it’s the actual fruit inside.
I like your post Nicole. Have you tried making a trail mix with either the dried seeds or chocolate covered dried seeds? It’s really good!
