  • When I think of crisps, cobblers and other such desserts, I tend to think of peaches, apples and other fruits that usually also make it into pie fillings, not of fruits like mandarin oranges. The unusual filling in Culinary Concoctions‘s Rhubarb and Mandarin Orange Crisp seems to work well, however, with the sweetness of the oranges taking the tart edge off of the rhubarb. The tanginess of the two fruits remains in the finished dish, leaving you with an almost refreshing dessert that goes great with vanilla ice cream.
  • I run, but I haven’t made by way up to doing any marathons quite yet. It’s not hard to see how 101 Cookbook‘s healthy, heartyMarathon Cookies might be a good choice for refueling after a big race. The cookies feature oats, whole wheat flour, olive oil and dates, and are rolled in sesame seeds for a little crunch. The secret ingredient in these is pureed beans, which adds a lot of moisture and some softness to the texture of the finished cookie.
  • Rye bread isn’t known for being sweet on its own, but the addition of a few elements to an otherwise plain loaf of bread can really change the flavor profile of this sandwich staple. The Pecan Fruit Rye Bread from Eat Me, Delicious includes dried cranberries, dried apples, pecans and orange zest, all of which add both great flavor and texture to an simple bread base made with rye flour and bread flour. These loaves are hand shaped and go great with cheeses (and other toppings), but the recipe could also be made to fit into a loaf pan for some interesting sandwich bread.
  • Donuts aren’t all about the frosting, not if you have a flavorful base underneath all that chocolate and those sprinkles. A soft, moist, fluffy interior and a slightly crisp coating from being fried is what you’re looking for in a donut – and if you happen to get the flavors of Meyer lemons and sour cream, as in Tartelette‘s Meyer Lemon and Sour Cream Donuts, so much the better. These small donuts are almost more like donut holes, small and round and perfect for popping into your mouth. There is lemon juice and zest in the dough, brightening up the flavor of the donuts, which are rolled in powdered sugar before serving. Lemon sugar might be a nice touch to finish these off, too.
  • Another great lemon dessert is Strawberry Lemonade Ice Cream. This recipe, from The Repressed Pastry Chef, is a very creamy lemon ice cream that has a ribbon of fresh strawberries swirled throughout. The strawberries are macerated with strawberries and a bit of vodka – which prevents the berries from freezing rock solid once in the freezer – before being incorporated. Make sure not to overchurn the berries with the ice cream, or you’ll end up with a pink dessert, rather than a yellow ice cream with a pink swirl.

Great headline. If your cookie has a bite-sized action and your reader completes the action, I think two things happen. Their self-confidence goes up (which feels good) and their trust in you increases.
