Julie and Julia, the movie

Julie and Julia script

The Julie/Julia Project was a blog about one woman’s – Julie’s – adventure of cooking her way through Mastering the Art of French Cooking, by Julia Child. The blog was eventually turned into a book, Julie and Julia, and that book has now been turned into a major motion picture of the same name. It stars Meryl Streep as Julia Child and Amy Adams as Julie Powell. Luckily for me, I was recently invited to a screening for bloggers, along with Matt Bites, Cooking With Amy, Food Blogga, Daily Dish, Squid Ink, Eater LA, Steamy Kitchen and Food GPS, where we got to see the movie a few weeks before its official release on August 7. I can’t give a full review right now, but I will say that I enjoyed the film a lot. It definitely made me want to do some French cooking – almost as much as my recent Paris trip did. Doesn’t Meryl (below) make a great stand-in for Julia ?

The screening included a cooking demo of some of the dishes from the movie at Le Cordon Bleu, prepared by Top Chef contestant Brian Marlarky (also known as the chef who wore the fedora in season 3, for fans of the Bravo TV program) and Julie Powell herself. Brian was charasmatic and, if it was his recipe we were eating, an excellent cook. The beef bourginion was outstanding. We also saw a food styling demo by Susan Spungen, who did all the styling of all the food in the movie – which was all real, by the way – and were able to chat with Julie Powell and actor Chris Messina, who was cast as Amy Adam’s husband in the film.

A full review will be up soon, and I think that I’ll have some movie passes to give away in the near future. Stay turned for more details on that, too!

Very cool, I just bought the book a few days ago after seeing the movie advertised. I have read some of Julia’s memoirs/biographies too….It will be interesting to see how true to the book/facts it is.
